Energy Efficency Vs Energy Conservation

Energy efficiency means using less energy to provide the same service.  Energy efficiency is different from energy conservation.  Conservation is defined as using less energy or eliminating an energy source while efficiency is getting more out of the energy you use.  For example, turning off a light is energy conservation because you are reducing your energy use.  Switching from an incandescent light bulb to a compact fluorescent light bulb (CFL) is energy efficiency because you are getting the same amount of light while using less energy.

Both energy efficiency and energy conservation can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce negative impacts on the environment.  Efficiency and conservation are also great ways to save money on energy costs.  Practicing energy efficiency and energy conservation is the best way to reduce your consumer costs for energy and be friendly to the planet.

The opportunity to increase energy efficiency exists wherever energy is used.  Over time the effort to increase energy efficiency will add up to savings on your household expenses.  How quickly those savings add up is dependent on your choices and habits.  Everything from heating and air condition systems, appliances and automobiles are now manufactured in energy-efficient models.  Choosing to replace your existing furnace, water heater, air conditioning, household appliance and car with a more modern efficient unit is the first step to achieving energy efficiency.

Purchases of energy efficient products or renewable energy system for your home may be eligible for federal tax credits.  The U.S. Department of Energy provides a list of qualifying products and systems.  Some tax credits are available through 2011 while others are available through 2016.

There are ways to increase your energy efficiency without making a major purchase.  Lighting represents a significant part of an average household’s energy use, so switching to CFL bulbs is an inexpensive way to start.  Replacing air filters regularly prevents heating and A/C units from working harder and running longer than necessary.  Shading A/C units by planting trees or creating a canopy increases efficiency.  Keep all systems clean and maintained seasonally and make sure that the A/C condenser is free from debris and tall grass.

Energy efficiency is enhanced by conservation, such as lowering the thermostat to a recommended 68 degrees in the winter and raising it to 78 degrees in the summer.  A well-insulated, well-sealed house will feel comfortable at the recommended levels.  Keep fireplace flues closed when not in use to prevent indoor air from escaping.  Use ceiling fans and be conscientious in the kitchen where the bulk of your household energy is used.  Purchase an inexpensive cover for your exhaust fan to block hot and cold air from coming into or leaving your house.

Creating habits that make your electrical devices operate better and last longer are the keys to better energy efficiency.  The time and effort expended to make simple lifestyle changes will make your home more comfortable and less expensive to operate.
