Power Saving Devices

Consumers who strive to conserve electricity in order to reduce household operating expenses and protect the environmental impact of energy consumption may consider purchasing one of the power saving devices that have been introduced to the marketplace. These power saving devices for homes and businesses are designed to save substantially on electricity usage and reduce energy bills.

Power-saving devices are based on surge-protection technology. They are designed with a capacitor that stores and equalizes electrical power in a consistent flow which prevents surges. These surges cause electricity to be wasted. When electricity is delivered to your home or businesses through power lines, there are frequent fluctuations in the electricity flow. Peaks, valleys, and surges exist in the constant run of electricity that is being transmitted over power lines, and much of this electricity is wasted. Power saving devices capture the electricity and use it more efficiently on demand.

Home appliances such as ranges, refrigerators, washers and dryers and office equipment including computers, copiers and printers require a large amount of power. Since the electricity comes in at an inconsistent rate and demand is high at certain times of the day, power surges can be a problem. These surges have the capacity to overheat electrical wiring and causing damage to appliances and office equipment. Periodic surges can shortening the lifespan of these machines. Power-saving devices control the output of power flow that is created throughout the home or office. Over time this can add up to significant reductions in electricity demand and significant savings.

Power-saving devices are different from the power surge protectors that electronic devices are plugged into though the technology is similar. Power-saving devices are typically a light-weight box that is plugged into the outlet nearest the electrical circuit box or in close proximity to the circuit panel. They do not have outlets for plugs, but trap the power coming into the building through power lines and redistribute it evenly throughout the home or building. By managing the power use and distributing it on demand these devices reduce the amount of energy that is purchased from the utility company. Installation of most power-saving devices is no more difficult than plugging them in. Multiple devices may be recommended for a larger home or office.

Power-saving devices are relatively inexpensive, usually costing between $200.00 and $300.00. Many manufacturers offer rebates or coupons. Depending on your average electricity usage, the devices can pay for themselves in a matter of months.

Power-saving devices will help protect against damaging power surges and decrease your demand for electricity, but common sense is still the best way to reduce your energy consumption. To enhance your energy savings consider replacing your old appliances with newer, energy-efficient models. Seal and insulate areas where warm and cold air may be leaking in and out of your house and turn off lights in rooms that are unoccupied. These practices coupled with a power-saving device will help you reduce your electricity costs and contribute to the health of the planet.
